Western Australia's Practical Driving Assessment checks whether you are ready to drive independently. It is commonly called the PDA. Good preparation combines safe driving skills with a valid booking, the required records and a suitable vehicle. An instructor's car and warm-up lesson can help you organise the day, but the official assessment remains a separate service.

This guide focuses on car assessments. Overseas conversion applicants should also follow the instructions for their transfer application, because the standard first-licence logbook rules may not describe their pathway.

Confirm the requirements for your application

For the ordinary first car licence, Transport WA lists a minimum assessment age of 17, at least six months holding a learner's permit and a passed Hazard Perception Test. Under-25 applicants ordinarily need 50 supervised hours, including five at night. Applicants aged 25 or older do not need the first-car-licence logbook.

These are the published application requirements checked on 2 October 2026. WA announced reforms to learner periods and hours in April 2026, so check current commencement and transition information before relying on a future eligibility date.

Check the actual dates and records before choosing an appointment. If you use Learn&Log, follow its declaration and submission instructions; if you use paper, make sure the required entries and signatures are complete. Ask the licensing service to resolve uncertainty about exemptions or previous licence history.

Eligibility also requires a valid authority to drive. Review your permit expiry and any conditions. An available appointment or a paid private package cannot override a missing government requirement.

Book through the official service

Use the official PDA booking information and DoTDirect. Transport WA says driving instructors booking on behalf of students must also use DoTDirect. A marketplace lesson calendar is not the government assessment calendar.

Save the booking reference, assessment centre, date and time. Check the instructor's availability before arranging a warm-up or assessment vehicle. A booking that looks convenient may involve more travel than expected, so plan the whole journey rather than just the assessment start time.

Use the official booking channel to check appointments and changes. Do not assume a third party can guarantee an earlier date. Keep your private support confirmation separate from the PDA confirmation so you can see exactly what each provider has agreed to supply.

Understand what the assessor is looking for

The PDA assesses how you control the vehicle, respond to traffic and make safe decisions. Transport WA's preparation resources describe the assessment items and exercises. Read them before your final practice sessions so the purpose of the assessment is clear.

Your preparation should cover observation, movement with other traffic, road positioning, speed selection and vehicle management. Ask your instructor which parts remain inconsistent. A specific comment such as noticing a speed change late is more useful than a broad instruction to drive better.

Practise the recommended exercises in safe, suitable places with supervision. Work towards doing them without a running commentary from the instructor. The assessor needs to see your own decisions, including how you adapt when traffic or directions differ from a familiar practice drive.

Supply a suitable assessment vehicle

You must provide a licensed, roadworthy vehicle in the correct class. Read the current C-class vehicle suitability guide before deciding which car to use. The assessor checks suitability before the PDA, and an unsuitable vehicle can prevent the appointment from proceeding.

Check the actual vehicle, not simply the make and model shown in a booking photograph. Confirm the transmission, registration and any equipment or defects that may affect assessment use. If the instructor proposes a replacement, confirm that it also meets the official criteria.

Practise in the car before the day where possible. Familiarity with its seating position, mirrors, braking response and controls reduces avoidable distraction. It does not remove the need to check those settings again before moving.

Check what a private support package includes

A support booking may combine a preparation lesson, travel and use of an instructor's car for the assessment. Read the specific listing. Do not assume that every package includes pickup, the government fee, waiting time or a return journey.

Record the meeting point and start time for the private service. Allow enough time for the warm-up and travel to the assessment centre. A package starting shortly before the government appointment may not be suitable if the pickup address is far away.

Check the complete payable price and the rules for changes. If the PDA is moved, you must also confirm whether the instructor and vehicle can attend the new time. A government reschedule does not automatically move a private booking, and a cancelled lesson does not cancel the PDA.

Prepare your documents and arrival plan

Follow the checklist in your booking confirmation and the official PDA information. It includes your learner's permit or the documents for your application, completed logbook evidence where required and a suitable vehicle. Bring any glasses or other items required by your licence conditions.

Transport WA asks applicants to arrive 15 minutes early. Plan additional travel time for normal delays and find out where the assessment meeting point is. General office opening hours are not a substitute for the instructions attached to your appointment.

Before leaving, check the tyres, lights, indicators and obvious vehicle issues with the vehicle provider. Secure loose belongings. If a problem is discovered, contact the relevant service promptly and find out the options instead of relying on an assessor to make an exception.

Use a warm-up to settle into the task

A warm-up is best used to review familiar skills and check the car. Avoid treating the last hour as a chance to learn an entirely new way of driving. If serious difficulties appear, discuss readiness honestly and check the change conditions for both bookings.

During the assessment, listen to directions while continuing to observe the road. If you need clarification, ask appropriately. Keep driving safely if a direction cannot be followed without a sudden or unlawful manoeuvre.

Do not judge the result from the assessor's expression or how long a particular section takes. Concentrate on the decisions within your control. The assessment is designed to evaluate your driving, and a private provider cannot guarantee its route or outcome.

Deal with the result and any further practice

After an unsuccessful attempt, ask for an explanation of the feedback and identify the skills to practise. Confirm the current rebooking rules and your authority to continue driving before arranging another appointment. An overseas applicant should check the transfer-specific position rather than assume the learner pathway applies.

After passing, complete the licence-issue requirements and check the conditions of the licence you receive, including any automatic-only restriction. Follow those conditions from the start.

LicenceLane can help you compare available independent instructors for WA preparation lessons and test-day support. Check availability and the exact service before paying. Transport WA conducts or administers the official assessment process and determines the licensing outcome; the private booking supplies only the services described in its listing.
