From car licence to heavy vehicle licence
- 1
Check your eligibility with TMR
TMR sets a minimum time you must have held your current licence, within the last 5 years: a car licence for 1 year before LR or MR, or 2 years before HR. You also declare that you are medically fit to drive the higher class, and you may need a medical certificate.
- 2
Pass the road rules test, if required
TMR may require a road rules (knowledge) test for the higher class. You book it and pay for it with TMR.
- 3
Train with an independent instructor
Book one-on-one training with an instructor who covers your Queensland suburb. The vehicle and transmission are shown on each instructor's listing. A test in an automatic normally results in an automatic-only licence condition, so check the vehicle first if you need a manual result.
- 4
Take the TMR practical driving test
You book the practical test with TMR, online or on 13 23 80, and pay the test fee to TMR directly. A service that includes test-day time covers your instructor's time and vehicle on the day, not the test itself.

Common questions
Which heavy vehicle licence do I need?
It depends on the vehicle's GVM, its number of axles and what it tows. In Queensland, LR covers buses and trucks of not more than 8t GVM; MR covers those over 8t GVM with a maximum of 2 axles; HR covers those over 8t GVM with more than 2 axles, and articulated buses; HC covers a truck over 8t GVM towing a trailer of more than 9t GVM. Check the GVM on the vehicle's compliance plate.
Can I go straight from a car licence to HR?
Yes, in Queensland, once you have held a car licence for at least 2 years within the last 5 years and meet TMR's other requirements. With an LR or MR licence the holding period is 1 year.
Is the TMR test fee included in the price?
No. LicenceLane sets the price shown for each service, and the total price and inclusions are shown before payment. TMR road rules test, practical test and licence fees are paid to TMR separately.
Can I book heavy vehicle training outside Queensland, or for an MC licence?
No. LicenceLane's LR, MR, HR and HC services are currently available only in Queensland, and LicenceLane does not offer MC (multi-combination) training or test-day services. Car lessons are available across Australia where an instructor covers your area.
