Licence conditions
In Queensland, the vehicle you take the practical test in determines your transmission condition:
A
Automatic only
Tested in an automatic vehicle: the licence is limited to automatic transmission.
B
Synchromesh
Tested in a synchromesh manual. TMR: you may only drive a vehicle with a synchromesh gearbox.
—
No transmission condition
Tested in a non-synchromesh (constant mesh) manual vehicle.
What you'll get: The vehicle and transmission are shown on each instructor's listing. In Queensland, a practical test in an automatic vehicle normally results in an automatic-only licence condition. If you need a manual or synchromesh result, check the vehicle before you book.
Training & testing
- 1
Road rules test, if required
TMR may require you to pass a road rules (knowledge) test for the higher class. You book and pay for it with TMR. Check the TMR upgrading page for what applies to you.
- 2
Practical training
One-on-one training in your instructor's LR vehicle, for the hours included in the service you book, covering vehicle controls, road craft and the skills the TMR practical test assesses.
- 3
TMR practical driving test
You book the practical test with TMR, online or on 13 23 80, and pay the test fee to TMR directly. A service that includes test-day time covers your instructor's time and vehicle on the day, not the test itself.
What to bring on test day
- Your valid learner or driver licence
- Closed-in shoes (most instructors require them as a safety rule)
- Any identification your state or territory's licensing authority requires
Common questions
What can I drive with an LR licence?
In Queensland: a bus or truck (including a prime mover or mobile crane) of not more than 8t GVM, any class C vehicle, and a trailer of up to 9t GVM. TMR publishes the exact definition.
Should I do LR or go straight to MR?
In Queensland both need a Class C licence held for at least 1 year, so it comes down to the vehicle you'll drive. LR covers buses and trucks up to 8t GVM; MR covers buses and trucks over 8t GVM with a maximum of 2 axles. If the job runs bigger vehicles, MR saves you a second upgrade later.
Do I need truck experience first?
No. Most people arrive having only ever driven a car. Training starts with the size and the mirrors and builds from there.
What's included in the price?
LicenceLane sets the price shown for each service. The hours included, whether test-day instructor and vehicle time is included, and the total price are shown before payment. TMR road rules test, practical test and licence fees are paid to TMR separately.
