Eligibility in Queensland
- Have held a Class C licence for at least 2 years, or an LR or MR licence for at least 1 year, within the last 5 years
- Pass the road rules test for the class, if TMR requires one
- Declare that you are medically fit to drive the higher class; you may need a medical certificate
- Pass the TMR practical driving test

Licence conditions
In Queensland, the vehicle you take the practical test in determines your transmission condition:

Automatic only
Tested in an automatic vehicle: the licence is limited to automatic transmission.
B
Synchromesh
Tested in a synchromesh manual. TMR: you may only drive a vehicle with a synchromesh gearbox.

No transmission condition
Tested in a non-synchromesh (constant mesh) manual vehicle.
What you'll get: The vehicle and transmission are shown on each instructor's listing. In Queensland, a practical test in an automatic vehicle normally results in an automatic-only licence condition. If you need a manual or synchromesh result, check the vehicle before you book.
Training & testing

Road rules test, if required
TMR may require you to pass a road rules (knowledge) test for the higher class. You book and pay for it with TMR. Check the TMR upgrading page for what applies to you.

Practical training
One-on-one training in your instructor's HR truck, for the hours included in the service you book, covering vehicle controls, road craft and the skills the TMR practical test assesses.

TMR practical driving test
You book the practical test with TMR, online or on 13 23 80, and pay the test fee to TMR directly. A service that includes test-day time covers your instructor's time and vehicle on the day, not the test itself.
What to bring on test day
- Your valid learner or driver licence
- Closed-in shoes (most instructors require them as a safety rule)
- Any identification your state or territory's licensing authority requires
Common questions
What can I drive with an HR licence?
In Queensland: a bus or truck (including a prime mover or mobile crane) over 8t GVM with more than 2 axles, an articulated bus, any MR vehicle, and a trailer of up to 9t GVM. TMR publishes the exact definition.
Can I skip MR and go straight to HR?
In Queensland, yes, once you have held a Class C licence for at least 2 years within the last 5 years and meet TMR's other requirements. With an LR or MR licence the holding period is 1 year. Check the TMR upgrading page before you book.
What is the knowledge test like?
TMR may require a road rules test for the higher class. TMR sets its format and pass mark and publishes the study material, so check the TMR driver tests page before you book it.
Is group or workplace training available?
