What you can drive

  • Rigid vehicles with three or more axles and a GVM over 15 tonnes
  • Large trucks and buses used in freight and construction
  • Everything covered by an MR licence

Eligibility

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have held a valid Class C (car) licence for at least 2 years
  • Meet the medical fitness requirements

Licence conditions

The vehicle you test in determines your transmission condition:

A

Automatic only

Test in an automatic vehicle — licence restricted to automatic transmission.

B

Synchromesh

Test in a synchromesh manual — drive any synchromesh gearbox vehicle.

Unrestricted

Test in a crash (non-synchro) gearbox vehicle — no transmission restriction.

What you'll get: We train and test in automatic vehicles, so your licence will carry an A (automatic only) condition. The B and unrestricted conditions above are shown for reference — talk to us if you need a manual assessment.

Common questions

What can I drive with an HR licence?

Rigid vehicles with three or more axles and a GVM over 15 tonnes — including large freight trucks and buses — plus everything an MR licence covers.

Can I skip MR and go straight to HR?

Yes. If you've held your Class C licence for at least 2 years and meet the medical requirements, you can train for HR directly without holding MR first.

What is the knowledge test like?

It's a multiple-choice heavy vehicle knowledge test at a TMR centre — you need at least 8 out of 10 correct. We'll point you to the right study material before you sit it.

Do you offer group or workplace training?

Yes — alongside one-on-one training we offer mobile group training options, ideal for employers upskilling several drivers at once. Group programs are quoted per job: send an enquiry through our contact page or call 0490 861 800 and we'll scope it with you.
