Yes. The standard Queensland pathway allows a class C licence holder to apply directly for HR after holding class C for at least two years. Obtaining MR first is not compulsory for that route.

Count the right licence time

The qualifying two years must fall within the preceding five years. Learner licence time does not count for this heavy vehicle upgrade. Time when the licence was suspended, surrendered, cancelled or expired is excluded.

An alternative HR route is to have held LR or MR for at least one year. This does not automatically make the total journey from a car licence faster, because eligibility for the earlier upgrade also takes time. If your history includes interstate or overseas licences, ask TMR to confirm what counts before booking the practical test.

Learning and upgrading are different

A Queensland C provisional or open licence authorises supervised learning in LR, MR and HR under the higher-class learning rules. You do not have to treat the two-year upgrade period as a ban on all HR training.

You must have an appropriate supervisor who has held the relevant open licence for at least one year, display L plates and follow the learning conditions, including zero alcohol. Confirm your authority with TMR if you hold a different licence type or an overseas licence.

An automatic car licence does not rule out HR

TMR permits a qualifying provisional or open licence holder with an automatic restriction to learn a manual vehicle in the same or an authorised higher class, under the supervision rules. The HR transmission entitlement ultimately issued depends on the assessment and relevant licence history. Confirm the intended result before booking an automatic, synchromesh or non-synchromesh truck.

Calculate the qualifying period accurately

Use the dates on which you held an eligible non-learner licence, not the date you first began learning to drive. The period must satisfy TMR's rules, including the treatment of interruptions and the requirement that qualifying time falls within the preceding five years.

For example, one year on a learner licence followed by one year holding provisional class C does not amount to the two qualifying years for direct C-to-HR eligibility. The learner period is excluded. Having been involved in driving for two calendar years is therefore not enough by itself.

If you are unsure, ask TMR to check the history before reserving a practical test or a package tied to a particular date. Keep the eligibility question separate from whether you may lawfully begin supervised HR learning in the meantime.

Consider whether an intermediate class serves a real need

An MR upgrade may be useful if you need to drive an MR vehicle before you qualify for direct HR. It is a separate entitlement that can meet an immediate requirement, rather than merely a compulsory step on the way to HR.

If you already meet the direct HR eligibility rules and only need an HR vehicle, an intermediate MR assessment is not required under the standard route. Ask the trainer to explain the proposed training plan without assuming an extra licence must be purchased first.

Avoid treating the direct route as a shortcut around competence. It removes the need for an intermediate licence assessment, not the need to learn safe heavy vehicle operation. The amount of preparation depends on your starting skills and the vehicle you intend to use.

Allow for the change from a car to a truck

A heavy rigid vehicle introduces different dimensions, controls and handling. Training should develop observation, planning, road positioning, turning, braking and reversing in suitable conditions. Existing car experience is useful background but does not establish readiness for the HR assessment.

Ask the instructor how the first session will assess your ability and how subsequent practice will be chosen. You should understand the skills being developed and the evidence of progress. A fixed package length is not a guarantee that everyone will be ready at the same point.

If you are also learning a new transmission type, discuss that alongside the vehicle-class change. Your plan may need time for both tasks. Select the intended gearbox because it fits the vehicle or work you need, rather than assuming the broadest transmission course is always necessary.

Confirm the truck and assessment arrangements

Ask which truck will be used for training and which one is supplied for the test. Check the transmission and expected licence condition, especially if the provider might substitute a vehicle. A change can affect both familiarity and the intended licensing outcome.

The truck must meet TMR's complete HR assessment specifications. Being legally an HR vehicle is not enough by itself to make it suitable for the test. Confirm those requirements before arranging private vehicle hire for a government appointment.

Read the inclusions for instruction, warm-up, test-vehicle access and any instructor attendance. Identify whether the government test fee is included or paid separately. This helps you compare providers and prevents a course title from creating an incorrect expectation about what has been purchased.

Put the remaining steps in a workable order

Resolve licence history and medical requirements early. Complete the required heavy vehicle knowledge test unless an exemption applies, then coordinate suitable training, a compliant truck and an eligible practical-test date. Some preparation can occur alongside administrative steps where your authority permits it.

Do not promise an employer a completion date based only on a package duration. Appointment availability, additional practice or a further assessment can affect the timetable. Keep the employer informed using confirmed dates and actual progress.

After passing, complete the licence upgrade and check the issued class and conditions. Paying for training, receiving a booking confirmation or passing the test does not alone establish the amended authority. The direct pathway is complete when the required entitlement has been issued.

Decide whether direct HR suits you

Consider the actual vehicle you need, your current driving skills, access to training and total cost. A direct route avoids an intermediate licence assessment, but it does not guarantee fewer lessons, a cheaper overall result or a pass within a fixed time.

Before booking, confirm eligibility and medical requirements, complete any required heavy vehicle knowledge test, and arrange suitable training and an HR assessment vehicle. The government practical test and licence upgrade remain separate from buying a lesson or test-day service.
