An HR licence has a minimum eligibility period, but there is no single training timetable that suits every applicant. Your licence history, readiness and access to a suitable test appointment all affect the time required.

Eligibility comes first

For a standard Queensland HR upgrade, you need class C held for at least two years, or LR or MR held for at least one year. Qualifying time must fall within the preceding five years and excludes learner time and periods when the licence was suspended, surrendered, cancelled or expired.

If you already meet the relevant period, you do not have to complete it again. Ask TMR to verify interstate or overseas history before committing to a test date.

Training time depends on readiness

Training should address your current skills and the transmission you intend to use. Experience driving a car does not by itself establish competence in a heavy rigid vehicle. Your trainer should assess your progress in observation, positioning, turning, braking, reversing and vehicle control.

A one-day or multi-day package describes the time purchased. It does not guarantee eligibility, a test appointment, a pass or licence issue by the end of the package. Build in time for further practice if the assessment identifies skills that need work.

Allow for the other steps

  • Complete the heavy vehicle knowledge test if required.
  • Arrange any medical assessment or documents TMR needs.
  • Confirm an HR test appointment at a suitable centre.
  • Reserve a compliant truck and any instructor support for that appointment.
  • Allow time for another attempt if needed, subject to TMR's booking requirements.

Learning may begin before the upgrade tenure is complete where your current Queensland licence authorises it and the higher-class supervision rules are followed. Confirm your circumstances before driving the truck.

Divide the timetable into separate stages

Think of the process as eligibility, preparation, administration, assessment and licence issue. Each stage answers a different question: whether you qualify, whether you can drive safely, whether the paperwork is complete, whether you pass and whether the entitlement has been issued.

Some stages can overlap. For example, an eligible Queensland provisional or open car licence holder may be able to begin supervised HR learning before completing the upgrade holding period. That does not permit an early practical upgrade or unsupervised HR driving.

Write down the parts already completed and the parts still uncertain. This produces a more useful timetable than counting only the hours advertised in a course. Ask TMR about licensing uncertainty and the provider about actual training and vehicle availability.

If you already meet the eligibility period

Start by confirming the required knowledge test or exemption and any medical evidence. Then compare instructor availability with practical-test appointments at a suitable centre. Both the government appointment and a compliant truck need to be available at the same time.

Ask the instructor how your starting ability will be assessed. Someone with relevant experience may need a different preparation plan from a driver new to heavy vehicles or a particular gearbox. Neither should assume that another person's completion time will apply.

If an employer needs an estimated start date, distinguish a confirmed assessment appointment from a guaranteed licence outcome. Allow for additional preparation, a disrupted booking or an unsuccessful attempt. Give a realistic update when those circumstances change rather than promising a fixed result.

If you are still building qualifying licence time

Confirm the date on which TMR will consider you eligible for the upgrade. Learner periods and excluded interruptions can make a simple anniversary calculation inaccurate. Interstate or overseas history may also require clarification.

Use the intervening time for appropriate study, comparing instructors and lawful preparation. Where your current licence permits supervised HR learning, make sure the correct supervision and other conditions are met. A future eligibility date is not a reason to ignore today's learning requirements.

Check prepaid expiry conditions before buying services well ahead of the assessment. Consider whether you can use the purchased hours within the stated period if your eligibility date or circumstances change. A package can be useful, but its expiry should fit a realistic training schedule.

Allow for the causes of delay you can identify

Medical evidence, licence-history checks, vehicle availability and suitable test appointments can affect the timetable. So can the need to develop a skill that is not yet consistent. Ask about the relevant issue rather than assuming every delay is caused by a shortage of lessons.

Review progress with your instructor before the cancellation or rescheduling deadline for an assessment arrangement. If the date is no longer workable, understand the government and private booking rules separately. Moving one appointment does not automatically change the other.

If another HR attempt is needed, confirm the applicable booking requirements directly with TMR. Do not import a waiting period from a car-test guide without checking its scope. Include the availability and cost of the truck when planning the next date.

Build a practical calendar for the final appointment

Record the private meeting time, any warm-up, travel to the centre and TMR's arrival requirement. Include the expected on-road assessment plus checks and administration. The test duration alone does not describe the whole period you may need away from work or other commitments.

Keep required documents and vehicle arrangements ready before the day. An administrative problem can prevent an appointment proceeding even when your driving preparation is strong. Confirm changes with both TMR and the private provider and retain the updated details.

After a successful assessment, distinguish licence issue from delivery of the plastic card. The issued entitlement or licence receipt can establish authority before the card arrives, subject to its conditions. A pass result alone is insufficient, so complete the upgrade process before starting unsupervised HR driving.

Test and licence issue

TMR expects 60–70 minutes of on-road driving for an HR test. You must arrive at least 20 minutes before the appointment, and vehicle checks and administration add time.

After passing, complete the upgrade with TMR. A pass result alone is not permission to drive HR unsupervised. Use the licence entitlement or receipt issued by TMR and check any conditions. TMR says the new licence card is sent within 21 days; the issue process and authority to drive matter separately from delivery of the card.

Plan around confirmed eligibility and bookings, and let demonstrated readiness determine the training schedule.
