The Queensland HC licence covers a truck or prime mover over 8t GVM towing a trailer of more than 9t GVM. Training builds combination-vehicle skill: coupling, reversing and articulated road craft. A licence does not guarantee a job or earnings.

Licence conditions
In Queensland, the vehicle you take the practical test in determines your transmission condition:

Automatic only
Tested in an automatic vehicle: the licence is limited to automatic transmission.
B
Synchromesh
Tested in a synchromesh manual. TMR: you may only drive a vehicle with a synchromesh gearbox.

Tested in a non-synchromesh (constant mesh) manual vehicle.
What you'll get: The vehicle and transmission are shown on each instructor's listing. In Queensland, a practical test in an automatic vehicle normally results in an automatic-only licence condition. If you need a manual or synchromesh result, check the vehicle before you book.

Road rules test, if required
TMR may require you to pass a road rules (knowledge) test for the higher class. You book and pay for it with TMR. Check the TMR upgrading page for what applies to you.

Practical training
One-on-one training in your instructor's combination vehicle, including coupling and reversing, for the hours included in the service you book, covering vehicle controls, road craft and the skills the TMR practical test assesses.

TMR practical driving test
You book the practical test with TMR, online or on 13 23 80, and pay the test fee to TMR directly. A service that includes test-day time covers your instructor's time and vehicle on the day, not the test itself.

- Any identification your state or territory's licensing authority requires

What can I drive with an HC licence?
In Queensland: a truck (including a prime mover or mobile crane) over 8t GVM towing a trailer of more than 9t GVM, plus any HR vehicle. B-doubles and road trains need an MC licence. TMR publishes the exact definition.
Do I need an HR licence first?
You need an MR or an HR licence, held for at least 1 year within the last 5 years, before you can upgrade to HC in Queensland.
Why does HC training take longer?
Combination vehicles add coupling, trailer reversing and articulated handling to the test. The hours included and the price are shown on each service before you book.
Are there medical requirements?
Yes. TMR asks you to declare that you are medically fit to drive the higher class, and you may need a medical certificate. Check with TMR and your doctor before you book training.
